It is not just a touch on the screen of the booth,
nor a fleeting gesture of one passing by:
it's the rope that I pull to tilt history,
it's a sip of solace in a bitter century.

My vote for 13 doesn't come from a promise,
it is born on the ground where the struggle is met:
on the plate on the table, the step that quickens,
in the stubborn calm of one who does not forget.

I carry in my eyes the sun of this soil,
the ancestral voice that was not forgotten;
I don't bow my head, I don't ask for solace:
too Latina to be oppressed.
